Days after being kidnapped, Tripura girl rescued from Rajasthan

Nearly ten days after a minor girl was abducted from her village in Khowai district, the Tripura Police rescued the girl from Rajasthan, arrested the kidnapper and brought them to the state, the police said on Friday. The kidnapper was forwarded to a local court in Khowai district on Friday.

The police received a complaint of abduction of a minor girl on May 6. Accordingly, they formed a team headed by sub-inspector Champa Das who went to Rajasthan the following day and rescued the minor girl and arrested the accused.

“We came to know that the minor girl was in Rajasthan. The team led by Sub-Inspector Champa Das was assisted by the Rajasthan Police. The team landed here with the accused person and the minor girl last night (Thursday),” said a police officer of the Khowai Women Police Station.

Earlier on March 25, Tripura Police tracked and rescued a minor girl, who was abducted from the state’s Dhalai district in December 2023, from Gujarat.

The father of the girl made a complaint against a youth from North Tripura district area, alleging that he had kidnapped his minor girl. A case was registered and the state police tracked the accused and the missing girl using cyber technology and Local Based Service (LBS) system.

After bringing him to Tripura on transit remand, the accused was produced before a local court, charged with kidnapping or inducing a woman to compel her to marry.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said in August last year that Tripura is among the top ranking states in the northeast region in child marriages and said his government is working to prevent it.

A 2019 international study found that Tripura occupied second position in India in terms of prevalence of child marriages among girls between 15-19 years of age. The report also found that over 80 per cent of the total child marriages took place in rural areas of three districts in the state.

Quoting a National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data, Young Lives – an international study on childhood poverty – had said at the time, “Tripura occupies the second position with respect to highest prevalence of child marriage amongst girls aged 15-19 years at 21.6 per cent which is significantly higher than the national average of 11.9 per cent.”
