‘Uproot BJP-led government’: Former Tripura CM Manik Sarkar urges people to come out and vote for INDIA alliance

CPI(M) politburo member and former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar on Tuesday urged people to uproot the BJP-led government and form a democratic and secular government led by the Opposition INDIA Bloc in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

In his address at a campaign rally in favour of Congress president and INDIA Bloc candidate for West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency Ashish Kumar Saha and Assembly by-poll candidate Ratan Das at Agartala this evening, Sarkar piled heat on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its alleged misrule.

He said, “Poverty, unemployment, poor wage, privatisation of education and health etc are prevalent in the country and that’s why, the current government is required to be uprooted from power.”

Appealing to the people to come out in support of the opposition across the country, Sarkar said, “People are losing jobs, companies are being shut down, the working class people are struggling. On one hand, there is a fight for the Lok Sabha polls and on the other hand, there is a fight for existence.”

He also urged people to consolidate family members apart from attending meetings and listening to political speeches.

“Have you seen what happened in 2023 (Assembly polls)? Do you want a repetition (of violence)? You don’t want it for sure. You have to come out and cast your own vote. We are with you. If you are stopped, sit on the road and protest. Unless you are able to cast your vote, you should not allow others to cast their votes,” he said.

CPIM’s Tripura Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury in a separate campaign programme at Baikhora in South district said that the Lok Sabha poll is about protecting the nation, democracy and the Constitution apart from forming a government.

He said that over 140 crore people are in danger under the dictatorship of the BJP government and that’s why, 27 political parties have come together putting aside their ideological differences to form the INDIA Bloc to oust the BJP from power.

“The Left parties and Congress have differences and yet, an alliance was formed for the sake of the country, its democracy and its Constitution. Some ruling party-backed people are controlling everything — trade, beneficiaries for government schemes, government services in Tripura etc. If anyone protests against these leaders, he or she will be either attacked or arrested,” said Chaudhury.

The two Parliamentary seats of Tripura – West Tripura and East Tripura – are scheduled to undergo polling in two phases; the first one on April 19 in the first phase and the second, on April 26 in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
